Glens Finest Rainbow

Today was another nice day on the Truckee... Glen told me this was his prettiest Rainbow he has caught to date, and Glen fishes every year in Colorado. Even his daughter and son in law for there first time fly fishing hooked a fish on the Truckee. Thanks Glen, I hope I see you guys next year.

Some More Spring Fun

The fishing has been pretty good already this Spring. I took out David from Reno today and for his very first time nymphing he did really well. That's right, I took David to the dark side. It's great when you teach someone that picks up on it only after a few tries. Stack mending, high sticking, and dead drifting. David is a real natural. He had the raddest tackle box of his Dads full of pristine old school flies, one of the coolest collections I've seen. Daivd don't fish those flies and hang that old Hardy St. George on the wall.

Early Spring?

Looks like we are going to have an early Spring this year. Temps have been in the 50's this week and the water temp has got up into the low 40's. My buddy Gabe came up and fished yesterday sticking a few nice fish on some BWO Nymphs. Skwallas, BWOs, are on the menu, with March Browns around the corner. Good luck with the baby Gabe.

Day Four...

My birthday day started off with a bang. First hole....Chris and I had a double hookup. I landed a 18" Bow and Chris a 15". The next two runs I lost two big Browns in the +20" class. We then walked up to a spot that I had a feeling there would be a few lunkers in. Chris said, "I thought I saw a fish rise in that foam line on the other side." Well, Chris was right. For the next two hours I watched Chris try to catch this 24" Brown. It was in a very tough spot. He missed it twice...Oh, and by the way we have Skwallas, and BWOs coming off right now.

Meet My Neighbors

After a slow morning on the LT dealing with gapers, you know the ones who reel in and try to run down to the next hole and then stand right in the middle of it Chris and I ended up meeting some of my nice finned neighbors. Chris first walked down and stuck a huge Brown in the Koles Hole and after hearing that I grabbed my rod and went down and stuck my own trophy size Brown. Water temp is 45 and things are starting to rock.

Bozeman Chris

Stoked...My good friend Chris Scott from Bozeman is here for the annual Spring Break fishing week. I've known Chris since the 7th grade growing up in Roseville and we both started fly fishing at an early age together. Years have past and Chris has made his way to Montana making the Yellowstone and Madison Rivers his stomping grounds. This year Chris didn't forget the animal packs (Schmidts), and of course this made Larry very happy. Lot's of lips have been ripped the last couple days. BWO's, and Skwallas are the flies of choice. These photos are from the last two days in the Battle Born State. Tomorrow off to the L.T.

Emergers

I can't emphasise the importance of fishing emergers. Today there were Baetis coming off everywhere, blanket hatch so to speak, but not a single head showing. Just because I didn't see fish rising doesn't mean fish weren't chowing on those tasty morsels. I began the day nymphing with a Skwalla Stone and Sz#18 Baetis Nymph. As the hatch began I switched out to a dry dropper rig, a Sz#16 Baetis Nymph with a Sz#16 Baetis Soft Hackle dropper. I always switch to a larger nymph and shallower rig during the hatch as fish move into the riffles to ambush their prey. That little soft hackle has taken more fish for me on the Truckee than any other fly in the last two years. Today it took five, and last year that fly took, a 25", and a 26" Brown.
